2016-36 Parks and Arena Attendant

The City of Dawson Creek invites applications for ONE Parks and Arena Attendant position in the Community Services (Parks and Recreation) department. Under the general supervision of the City Gardener or designate, a Parks and Arena Attendant performs a variety of operational and preventative maintenance tasks such as grounds care, pesticide application, tree risk assessment, and irrigation maintenance. The position will assist with parks planning and related duties in City parks and greenspaces and other recreational facilities and spaces including cemeteries.  The successful candidate must also be able to operate equipment such as weed whips, lawn mowers and other equipment as required. During the winter months, the Parks and Arena Attendant transfers to the City Arenas and under the general supervision of the Parks and Facilities Manager or designate performs a variety of duties related to the security, care and maintenance of the City Arena facilities including service to the public and facility users. This is a new position and has not yet been reviewed by the Joint Job Evaluation Committee as to the job duties, responsibilities and the rate of pay. The proposed hourly starts at $25.44/hr with a 40 hour standard work week.

Prerequisites for the position include the completion of grade 12, and a minimum 2 year post-secondary program leading to a certificate, diploma or degree in Horticulture, Arboriculture or related field. A  valid Driver’s License is also required. Preference will be given to applicants with a BC Landscape Integrated Pest Management Pesticide Certification, Irrigation Industry Association of British Columbia Certification, International Society of Arboriculture Certificate or similar. The successful candidate will be required to obtain the Pesticide and Irrigation Certificates as well as a Refrigeration Basic Safety Awareness Certificate prior to the completion of their probationary period should they not hold valid certification at time of hire. Prior work experience in a similarly physically demanding position involving ornamental landscaping, turf management, and operation of industrial turf maintenance equipment, or demonstrated transferable skills from previous employment will be considered assets. The successful applicants must have the physical agility and ability to complete duties requiring physical effort and to perform all duties in a safe manner while following established procedures.  The successful applicant must also demonstrate an ability to maintain harmonious relationships with all members of the public and other staff members.
