Subject: The Passing of a Good Man
The sudden loss of our friend and former Mayor has shocked and greatly saddened us.
It seemed that Calvin was always giving someone somthing. I spoke with him in August, once again requesting his support, which again, he granted without hesitation.
The loss of such a caring, dedicated and energetic man has deeply affected us and I'm sure many others.
Our deepest condolences to Calvin's family...

Subject: Thanks, Calvin.
It was my pleasure and honour to be a member of the Dawson Creek media with Calvin and to have worked with him on the 1998 Northern BC Winter Games board of directors. More than that, though, I considered him a friend. His optimism, sense of fun and vision were incredible attributes and I am glad to have had him as a part of my life.

Subject: Calvin's Impact On Me
In June of this year I was in Dawson Creek , working on my campaign as the NDP Candidate for Prince George-Peace River.
Calvin very generously blocked off an hour to meet with me and hear my views and platform. I was very impressed with how calm and forthright he was. I'm sorry I didn't get to know him better....but the time I did have with him was memorable. Thanks for the memory Calvin.

The Northern Development Initiative Trust was very priviledged to have Calvin on our Board. Calvin naturally knew how to 'make decisions in the north - for the north'. His humour, and quick smile, generousity of spirit and support for others are qualities that will be treasured by all those who had the honour of knowing and working with him.

Subject: Mayor Kruk
My business partner Rick Elligott and I met Calvin while working with the Peace River Regional District. Calvin stood out as a vivid, intelligent young man with a strong sense of purpose and direction. His excitement about Dawson Creek's move toward sustainability was palpable, and he was eloquent in his persuasive techniques when it came to environmental initiatives. As a former mayor, I admired his style and substance, and felt that his path, wherever it would lead him, would be marked by outstanding service. Rick and I are shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. Our hearts are with his family, and with his political and staff colleagues and friends. What a tremendous loss.

Subject: A friend taken away
I remembered when I moved to Dawson Creek from Powell River and then a couple of years later Calvin moved to Dawson Creek from Powell River. We had a bit of a joke going about how between both of us, we probably knew everbody in both towns! Calvin always asked about my family and always had time to listen. Calvin always had time to talk, share a story, and get involved. Back a few years ago when Austin was 5, I was coaching baseball and Austin was on my team. Calvin came out to help me at every practice and game. He wanted to be involved and he wanted most of all the kids to have fun. He truly made it a fun time. A few years later I was coaching bowling and Austin came to play in the league. Calvin would watch Austin, and all the other kids, then listen to their stories and laugh with them all. In our later years as firends and co-workers, Calvin still had the time for me and everyone else even though he was a very busy man. He was a friendly face that I looked forward to seeing at our board meetings twice a month. This is a man that will not be forgotten. God must have needed another great angel to have taken you from us so early in life. Rest in peace. We will all miss you.

Subject: Calvin, friend and colleague
It was with great shock and deep sadness that my wife and I learned of Calvin's passing. I would like to pay tribute to a friend and colleague.
Having worked with Calvin for the past nine years on Council, I came to realize what a special talent he had to communicate with people.
When Calvin was elected Mayor three years ago, I questioned his ability to lead our City. He said to me, "Give me a chance, just give me six months." During one of the last one-on-one conversations I had with Calvin, I told him he had proven to me he had what it takes to lead us through the 21st century.
I take great comfort in the fact that during one of my last conversations with Calvin just after he was diagnosed with cancer, when, as fellow cancer victims one tends to assess where they are in their life, he said, "I woudn't change a thing, I am at a place in my life of great contentment. I have a wonderful family and I am right where I want to be. If I knew I was going to die in a short time, I would continue to do exactly what I am doing now." It isn't everyone who experiences complete contentment with where they are in life at such a young age.
I will miss him greatly.

Subject: Too soon
We were stunned to learn of Calvin's death. To us, he was a bright light in Dawson Creek, kind, funny, warm. We treasure one of his paintings: a Northern night with a cloud shrouded blue moon. It converys both longing and serenity, revealing perhaps a more private facet of its painter. It is just too soon to have you gone. God keep you, Calvin.

Subject: To Calvin
My heart goes out to Faith and Austin and to our community who has lost one of its greatest friends. I think Calvin touched so many, not only because of his gentle charisma, evident in his eyes that seemed always to be twinkling with wit and kindness, but because he knew something about a community that we know as well, though maybe not all of us consciously. And that is that a community is not, in the end, defined by its economic growth (though Calvin made a success of that as well), but by the expression of its people through arts and culture. It is how we learn about ancient civilizations, by the art and thinking that it produces. Calvin's commitment to the arts, to green initiatives, to an overriding kindness to all, made our community a vibrant creative place that I am sure would make any civilization proud.
I, like so many, will miss him terribly.

Never had I seen such an expression of the northern lights as that painted by Artist Calvin Kruk.
At the time I was the emerging Art Curator at Peace Gallery North. And wow - what an interesting expression Calvin shared... a cubist Ted Harrison! A modern vision of the Peace River magic. Ultimately, a person that communicated so well and included us all.
I am surprised by how deeply I am affected by his tragic and sudden passing, and can only imagine how hard this must be for his wife, son, family and close friends. But know that his legacy must live through you all.
RIP Calvin.

Calvin brought so much and gave so much to his friends, his collegues, his associates, but most of all to those he considered "family". Faith and Austin, our hearts go out to you. But in these times of despair and sorrow, remember how blessed you are to have Calvin share in your lives just as all of us are. He was and will always be, a very special man.

Subject: Not just a politician
I think the reason the whole community stands in shock and corporate sadness is due to the fact that Calvin wasn't just a politician. He was so much more. He genuinely cared about the people of the community he served. It was an honour to serve with him in Kiwanis and always a joy to have him around our hospital for events and celebrations. He leaves a void that will not easily be filled by simply filling a job. He leaves a legacy of service and caring that will be remembered for a long time. I guess our challenge is to go and do likewise for our community with the same spirit and fervor that Calvin did!

I can't remember the last time a person's passing has left me feeling so stunned. Calvin was much too young to be taken from his family and friends. I feel so honored to have known Calvin. He was a wonderful artist, a kind and honest human being, and a great community leader. To Faith and Austin, my tears are for you on the loss and grief your family must be feeling. Be assured, Calvin will never be forgotten, he touched too many lives in such a positive way for that to ever happen.

Subject: My Freinds Calvin, Faith & Austin
The first time I met Calvin was when he was working at CJDC, around 1994. He was drawn to my business because of the subject - ART. He would look around talk about art & his desire to paint. What developed was a friendship I will always treasure. Calvin loved living in the Peace and was always interested in the best for his communty. He succeded in his art, and working to better his community, but the time I remember most vividly was when he met Faith - what a happy Guy! I was fortunate to be working with Cal at that time - Austin came as an extra bonus in his life. I will miss you Calvin. Every colourful Peace Country sky will bring you back to me. |
