Taxes

Property Taxes

The Assistant Tax Collector enacts the property tax bylaw and regulates property tax rates from Council for the annual tax billing. Tax notices are normally mailed out by the middle of May and are due July 4, 2011 at 4:30pm. After the Due Date of July 4, 2011 a penalty of 10% is added to the current outstanding taxes. These penalties are a requirement of the Community Charter. The City has no authority to either waive or modify these penalty amounts. A payment that is one day late is subject to the same penalty as a payment of taxes one month after the due date.

Prepayment of taxes is recommended. Interest is applied to payments as designated by the provincial government that are subject to change on a scheduled basis during the year. Note: Interest is not paid from May 1 to July 4.

Online Banking

If you are making payment by online banking for your property taxes you will have to add the City of Dawson Creek as a new payee (Dawson Creek City of – Taxes) and use your roll number as your account number dropping the first two zero’s and the decimal (ie. if your roll number is 001234.500 you will enter 1234500 as your account number).

Home Owner Grants

Home Owner Grant Applications must be completed every year if the property owner is eligible.  The Home Owner Grant is on the back of the property tax notices or can be obtained from City Hall.  The grant should be claimed prior to July 4, 2011 to avoid penalties.

The City of Dawson Creek will be including the Northern and Rural Area Home Owner Grant benefit of up to $200 for 2011 and subsequent tax years on Tax Notices. More info

We are having problems with the simplified online home owner grants so you can submit the same way as last year by downloading form and faxing or emailing the completed grant back to our office. (Note that your Folio number is the same as your Roll number.)

Annual Tax Sale

Every year a tax sale is held on the last Monday in September. Properties with delinquent taxes (3 years outstanding) are subject for sale. The 2011 Tax Sale will be held on September 26, 2011 in Council Chambers at 10 am. All taxes must be paid by December 31 of every year. If not paid, the property will then accrue interest on a daily basis with rates assigned by the provincial government.

With our new Pre-authorized Payment option, a prepayment is made automatically on the first of each month and applied to your property taxes. Interest is paid on this prepayment on December 31 and April 30 of each year (interest is currently set at 1.0%).
