The City of Dawson Creek has completed a review of the water rate structure. Phase 2 water rate increase begins January 1, 2013. For more information view the notice sent to all Utility users or contact us regarding your rate changes.

The Utility Department plays a significant role in the Finance Department. All properties are metered for water consumption. Meter readings are obtained bi-monthly for the bi-monthly billing cycles.

The utility bill includes a water charge, a sewer charge, which is 60% of the water charge and a scavenger fee. Rates and fees are authorized by bylaw.

Any outstanding amount at December 31st is transferred to the property tax roll, interest on the outstanding amount accrues on a daily basis.

Waste Collection Information

All permanent and temporary garbage containers are available directly through Waste Management or another private contractor.

Effective 2009, the collection of waste will be restricted to two (2) garbage bags or two (2) standard containers per property.  Canadian Waste will be enforcing these limits.

Additional garbage bags or containers will be collected provided they are affixed with a pre-paid bag tag. Bag tags are available at City Hall and Dawson Co-op.  The cost per tag is $3.00.

Every owner and occupier of a property shall provide standard containers sufficient in number at all times to contain all waste originating from his or her property and shall store all such waste on the property in such containers.

DEFINITIONS:

“Garbage bag” means a bag manufactured from durable plastic that is strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting, is free from rips and tears, is capable of being securely tied at the top, and is no more than 1 metre (3 feet) in height and 0.67 metres (2 feet) in width.

“Standard container” means a rigid durable receptacle that has a maximum capacity of 45 litres, is manufactured from either metal that has been treated so that it will not corrode, or plastic, and is fitted with secure handles and a water-tight cover.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

If I put out less than two bags one week can I put out more than two for free the following week?

Unfortunately no, due to the large number of residences served, the waste disposal company cannot track the number of bags picked up each week.
