January 3, 2012

The City of Dawson Creek has agreed to provide additional funding to the Dawson Creek Rage Hockey Society. An amount of $110,000 has been made available to the Society. These monies are over and above the City’s previous commitments to the Rage Society.

The funding will allow the Rage Society to address cash flow issues and meet ongoing financial obligations. The additional support signals the City’s continued desire to see the Junior ‘A’ Dawson Creek Rage successfully complete its second season in the North American Hockey League.

Mayor Mike Bernier says that this decision was taken after careful consideration of the City’s options. “The City has made a committed effort to assist the Society in providing Junior ‘A’ Hockey to the community. The team is an important partner for the EnCana Events Centre as the facility’s “anchor” tenant.”

The decision to increase the City’s investment in the Rage recognizes that significant financial implications are created for the City through the Rage-EnCana Events Centre agreement. As Mayor Bernier states “When we crunched the numbers, this course of action best protected the community’s interests.”

The City and Global Spectrum have worked with the Rage Society to develop a business plan and marketing model to maximize opportunities for growth. The key element necessary to ensure the success of the team is increased attendance. The Rage’s next games are January 7th and 8th against the Alaska Avalanche so we encourage the community to come out and show your support.

The City has also determined that it will not have any ongoing role as a funding partner to the Rage Society past the current hockey season. Mayor Bernier emphasizes “We have been clear with the Society and the Rage Investment Group. Council’s direction is that the Society will need to ensure that it is financially sustainable without further subsidy in its operations beyond the 2011-12 season.”

For additional information please contact Mayor Mike Bernier at 250.784.3616 or the Chief Administrative Officer, Jim Chute, at 250.784.3613.
