Education & Information

Public Schools

State-of-the-art education is provided in School District #59 (Peace River South). All grades are provided through a network of 15 elementary, middle and secondary schools, which are located in the City of Dawson Creek and surrounding rural areas.

Dawson Creek is also the administrative centre for School District #59, providing comprehensive education across the entire South Peace District including the communities of Tumbler Ridge, Chetwynd, Rolla and Pouce Coupe. School District #59 is recognized as a provincial leader in education technology. All schools are equipped with an advanced telecommunications system that allows for skill development in the information technologies including audiovisual and media arts. This system is also used to provide a sophisticated distance education program, grades K - 12, for rural residents or for those students who choose or need home-based education. Students graduate from this "Electric Ed" with the same provincial certificate as that provided by a regular secondary school. School District #59's Career Education program provides a smooth transition from school to the workplace. Career Ed offers three pathways for students in grade 11 and 12 to gain valuable career knowledge and skills, co-operative education, secondary school apprenticeship and career preparation programs.

The School District is also a provincial leader in special needs technologies and services, including children with behavioral or learning disabilities, as well as the special challenges of gifted students. The French Immersion program, which began with just 19 children in 1983, has now graduated eight classes.
