The Region offers diverse camping, fishing, hiking, boating, and wildlife viewing opportunities. For the extremist, rock climbing, spelunking, and mountaineering are less than an hour away. For the less adventurous, one can take a leisurely stroll through any of the area's beautiful parks and community forests. (See the Parks Overview.) Events:See event listings at Tourism Dawson Creek's web site: Facilities & ActivitiesDawson Creek has a number of indoor facilities including the brand new Kenn Borek Aquatic Centre, a 25m, 8-lane swimming pool. Amenities at the pool include a swirl pool, the Therapeutic and Aquacise Leisure Pool, Tots pool, 1m & 3m diving boards, waterslides, as well as sauna and steam rooms. Regularly scheduled classes, including water safety, youth specialty classes, and fitness and leadership development, complement public and adult swims. The pool offers adapted aquatic and learn-to-swim classes for all ages, as well as parent and tot, family, and public swims. The pool is also available for birthday party rentals. The newly renovated Memorial and Kin Arenas provide skating opportunities for all ages. These arenas are home to the Junior and Senior Canucks. In addition, these arenas host a variety of other skating programs such as figure skating, minor hockey, speed skating, women's hockey, commercial leagues, public skating, and learn-to-skate programs. During the spring and summer months, the facilities are host to concerts, trade shows, sportsmen shows, meetings and other public events. The Dawson Creek Curling Rink caters to all ages from elementary students to seniors and is open to leagues four nights a week with a number of bonspiels throughout the season. The curling rink was renovated and re-opened in January 2000. It features 8 sheets of artificial ice, banquet facilities for up to 200 people, as well as Christmas party bookings. The Parks and Recreation Department operates four seasonal programs per year, with a variety of activities for preschoolers to seniors. These include co-ed volleyball league, in-line hockey, learn-to-skate program, volleyball and football camps, special events such as the Christmas Tree Lightup, Easter Extravaganza, Halloween Howl, Teen & Pre-teen Dances and partner programs. The department manages City Kids Daycare (30 months - 5 years), After School Care (5 - 12 years), Kinder Care (kindergarten), Morning Care, and Full Care.
