![]() Skateboard ParkA safe, attractive and challenging Skate Park was developed for the enjoyment of the youth in the community, in particular for low income, less fortunate kids. The intent was to help reduce vandalism, harassment, loitering in the town by providing a safe space and a positive opportunity for the RCMP to interact with the youth of the community.
At a public meeting in November of 2001, attended by over 50 youth, parents, business owners, and RMCP, the need for a skateboard facility was clearly identified. From that meeting, volunteers met and formed the Mile “0” Skate Park Club. With the formation of the Mile “0” Skate Park Club, youth volunteers supported fundraising activities such as raking lawns, shoveling snow, raffles, car washes, barbeques and working as volunteers for other organizations’ events. The group made a power point presentation to City Council and other groups in order to support their request for funding and assistance in building the Park. The local RCMP members took an active role in supporting the project. Two of their members were elected President and Vice-President of the club. In July of 2003, the Rotary Club of Dawson Creek approached the club for a partnership in the program. In July of 2004, the Skate Park Club asked the City of Dawson Creek to help with the tendering process and the building of the park. The facility took about 2 months to complete and is now an example of the whole community working together for a common goal. The purpose to this skateboard facility is to reach out to youth who do not normally participate in more traditional recreation activities. The park is intended to provide a fun and challenging opportunity for skateboarders and other action sports participants. The main focus of the facility will be for beginner to advance level users with the chance to grow and progress. As well, this skateboard park is a great family orientated facility. Read
