Dawson Creek Rage Hockey Team Launches in 2010
It's Official – The DC Rage Are Moving Ahead!

Today marks a pivotal day in Junior Hockey in Dawson Creek with the DC Rage Hockey Society announcing that they have officially joined the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and will play their first game starting in September 2010. The recruitment of a general manager and hockey operations begins immediately.

"After three years plus, I am excited to say we finally made it!" said Pat Rorison, co-founder of the group that brought the financial backing together to get the team going. "Many people have worked hard to bring a franchise to Dawson Creek and are excited about bringing Junior “A” hockey back to our community." Read the entire press release

Dawson Creek wins Silver in GamesTown2010 Contest

Dawson Creek has been awarded silver in the GamesTown 2010 competition. As a result, Dawson Creek will receive $50,000 to put towards the upgrade of a sport or healthy living facility.

DAWSON CREEK TO HOST CANADA’S NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAM CONDITIONING CAMP

The City of Dawson Creek will host Canada’s National Women’s Team for a conditioning camp from May 25 to June 17, the final team activity before centralization for the 2009-10 season begins in Calgary in August 2009. Canada’s National Women’s Team will be based at the EnCana Events Centre in Dawson Creek for the 24-day camp. Twenty-six players have been identified for centralization for the 2009-10 season, and all will be in attendance for the camp. These players will be vying for one of 21 roster spots for the team that will represent Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C. from February 12-28, 2010. Read Press Release

 

COMMUNITIES AWARDED FUNDING TO EXPAND SOLAR PROJECTS

PENTICTON – Six communities have been awarded $20,000 to further develop solar hot water systems and other solar initiatives in an effort to conserve and promote clean energy throughout the province, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.

“These communities are demonstrating how solar technology can be a viable part of a community’s energy solution,” said Premier Campbell. “British Columbians embrace innovative and sustainable energy solutions, and with programs like SolarBC, the Province is demonstrating its commitment to becoming energy self-sufficient while tackling climate change.”

The communities selected are: the district of Saanich, the city of Kelowna, district of Tofino, district of North Vancouver and a partnership between the city of Dawson Creek and West Moberly First Nation. These communities were chosen through an RFP process and will receive $20,000. Read more...


PREMIER PRESENTS 2ND LIVESMART BC GREEN CITIES AWARDS


PENTICTON – Nine outstanding local governments and two community partners have been selected as recipients of the provincial government’s second annual LiveSmart BC Green Cities Awards for demonstrating leadership and innovation in sustainability. Premier Gordon Campbell announced the winning communities, sharing $475,000 in award funding, at the Union of BC Municipalities annual convention in Penticton.

“These awards are just one of the ways in which the Province is recognizing communities who are taking action on climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Premier Campbell. “I congratulate every finalist for working hard to build vibrant, livable and sustainable communities that generations of tomorrow will be proud of.”

The 2008 LiveSmart BC Green Cities Award winners showed excellence across a wide range of criteria, including livability, actions to address climate change, innovation and transferability. The winners are:

  • Population 0-1,499: Taylor ($25,000);
  • Population 1,500-4,999: Grand Forks ($25,000);
  • Population 5,000-9,999: Smithers ($25,000);
  • Population 10,000-24,999: Dawson Creek ($50,000);
  • Population 25,000-99,999: Prince George ($100,000);
  • Population 100,000+: Surrey ($100,000);
  • Regional District (Regional): Capital Regional District ($50,000); and
  • Partnership Award: City of Victoria and Dockside Green Ltd., and District of Sechelt and Sunshine Coast Association for Community Living ($50,000 for each community).

“The LiveSmart BC Green Cities Awards highlight the significant and lasting impact local governments can have on the future of British Columbia,” said Community Development Minister Blair Lekstrom. “This year’s finalists and award recipients are role models for other local governments who are interested in creating better communities in which to live, work and play.

Solid Waste Management Plan Review - Planning for the Future of our Garbage

The Peace River Regional District is updating its Regional Solid Waste Management Plan as required by the Ministry of Environment. The plan will look at ways we can implement new programs to meet the growing demand to provide more recycling and service, to reduce the amount of garbage going into our local landfills, and make our region more sustainable. With a booming construction industry and continued economic growth, the need to manage our landfill space and protect our environment is more important than ever.

Three Advisory Committees have been recruited to start the process being led by consultants Earth Tech Canada. The Solid Waste Management Plan is a regional plan, representing the regional district electoral areas and the member municipalities.
