Dawson Creek is home to many companies and employees of the oil and gas sector, being within the Montney Formation. The Montney Formation (also called the Montney Basin) contains a large amount of marketable natural gas, stretches across northwestern Alberta and northeastern British Columbia.
Strengthening energy prices and demand from the post pandemic economic recovery show that raw natural gas production in BC is forecast to increase by almost 18%, as per the British Columbia Oil & Gas Commission 2022-23/2024-25 Service Plan. The majority of the growth and investment in the Montney Basin over the last several years is thanks in large part to its “Super Liquids Rich” composition. Even in periods of low natural gas commodity prices, this composition makes for profitable economics for operators in the area.
LNG Canada is currently building a $40 billion Liquefied Natural Gas export terminal, one of the largest private investments in Canadian history. This project includes the Coastal GasLink pipeline. It will transport gas required by the facility from the Dawson Creek region to the LNG export terminal in Kitimat on BC's north coast. To learn more, visit www.coastalgaslink.com.
The AltaGas Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal, which opened in 2019, and Pembina's Prince Rupert Export Terminal, which began exporting in 2021, provide many opportunities for propane as well. Previously, Canada was exporting propane through US terminals.
