Read below about the decisions made by the City of Dawson Creek Council at the May 13, 2024 Council Meeting.
Representatives from the South Peace Hospice Palliative Care Society were in attendance to proclaim May 2024 as Hospice Palliative Care Monday in Dawson Creek, BC. Hospice Palliative Care Month is focused on raising awareness of hospice care, and recognizing that everyone should have access to quality end-of-life care. The society is comprised of a large number of volunteers that provide direct and indirect hospice palliative care services to those individuals living within Dawson Creek.
May 16, 2024 was proclaimed as Moose Hide Campaign Day in Dawson Creek, BC on behalf of the Nawican Friendship Centre. The Moose Hide Campaign is an Indigenous-led, grassroots movement of men, boys and all Canadians standing up to end violence against women, children and all those along the gender continuum. The Moose Hide Campaign was founded along the ‘Highway of Tears’ in British Columbia in response to the injustices and violence faced by many women and children in Canada, particularly those who are Indigenous. City of Dawson Creek Public Works Staff were in attendance to proclaim May 19-25, 2024 as Public Works Week in Dawson Creek, BC. Public Works professionals focus on infrastructure, facilities and services that are of vital importance to sustainable and resilient communities and to the public health, high quality of life and well-being of the people of Dawson Creek. Thank you to all of our City of Dawson Creek Staff who work so hard to provide Public Works services to our community.
Representatives from Aero Future Canada provided a presentation about the Introduction of Autonomous Aerial Vehicles, including the designs and applications where these vehicles might be used. There was no specific ask from the organization, as they were only providing information at this time.
A letter from Haven Family Services requesting a letter of support regarding an Expression of Interest for the Planet Youth Program was received. This is a pilot project sponsored by Northern Health, and Haven Family Services are hoping to be the successful agency to establish this initiative in Dawson Creek. Council approved staff to send a letter of support.
A letter from Dawson Creek Secondary School was received with a request to host the 2024 graduation ceremony, dry grad festivities and prom in the Ovintiv Events Centre, as well as an additional request to waive the $4000 fee required to rent the facility. Council approved the request.
A letter was received from the Dawson Creek & District Chamber of Commerce requesting sponsorship for their BIGBALL smallball Tournament on May 25, 2024. Council authorized staff to provide sponsorship of $250 or an equivalent door prize.
The Village of Pouce Coupe extended an invitation to Mayor and Council to attend the Annual Canada Day Parade held in Pouce Coupe, BC. They also offered the option to enter a float into the parade. Mayor and Council accepted the invitation and will be participating in the parade as well.

Staff delivered a report to Council that demonstrates the progress of the budget versus actuals during the first quarter of 2024, showing that management is closely monitoring the revenues and expenses to ensure that the 2024 budget will be achieved. View the full report online.
Council awarded the Invitation to Tender 2024-17 Capital Road Works - 112 Avenue - 7 Street to 8 Street (Reconstruction & Water Extension) to Jacobsen Contracting Ltd. for the tendered price of $1,217,685.85, plus applicable taxes. View the report and a Key Plan for this project online.
Council awarded RFQ 2024-15 Heating and Cooling Unit Replacement and Improvements - Calvin Kruk Centre to Enersolv Design and Build Ltd. for $533,700, plus applicable taxes. Council also approved an increase to the total project budget, changing it to $680,000, reallocating $322,500 from the existing 2024 Capital Projects Budget.
Council authorized staff to enter into Lease Agreements for the purpose of renting space at the Memorial and Kin Arena's for a three-year term from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2027, with the option to renew for a further two-year term to the following arena user groups:

Tax Rates Bylaw no. 4581, 2024 was adopted.
