October 1-7, 2023 was proclaimed as KidSport week. KidSport provides sport registration grants to more than 3000 financially disadvantaged children annually across British Columbia and more than 31,000 kids annually across Canada. KidSport provides opportunities for local children to improve their health through experiencing the joys and memories of sport participation and belonging to a community.
October 2023 was proclaimed Foster Family Month. Thousands of British Columbia foster families provide alternate family care for children temporarily unable to live with their families and extended families. Foster families work in partnership with birth parents, extended families and community child and family services as an integral and valued part of a team that serves the children and families of British Columbia. Fostering is a community responsibility and foster families build stronger communities.
October 2023 was proclaimed Disability Employment Awareness Month. Persons with disabilities are valued members of our community and contributing members of our workforce; they deserve the opportunity to work in their community where they are respected and rewarded for their efforts, skills and accomplishments.
Doig River First Nation attended to give a presentation on the Urban Reserve Development in Dawson Creek and what next steps will look like: community engagement with Dawson Creek, a workshop on the Municipal Services Agreement with City of Dawson Creek staff and engagement through the Municipal Services Agreement process. They also shared a report about the economic participation and contributions of First Nations in BC.
The Dawson Creek Pride Society wrote a letter requesting Council to consider putting a formal agreement in place for the care and maintenance of the rainbow crosswalk. Council asked staff to meet with the Dawson Creek Pride Society to discuss options around the rainbow crosswalk in regards to the issues mentioned in the letter. Council noted their appreciation for the members of the community that helped repair the rainbow crosswalk over the weekend and agreed that a maintenance plan needs to be considered.
Council approved the request for a letter of support on behalf of the Dawson Creek Literacy Society in regards to their services and supports to Newcomers to Canada. The Lake View Learning Centre assists more than 600 individuals per year with settlement services and is one of the busiest centres in Northeast BC.
Every three months departments and divisions of service of the City of Dawson Creek report current or completed projects, and progress they have made towards their strategic priorities. Many also share statistics regarding the services they offer.
