May 5-11, 2024 is Emergency Preparedness Week. At the City of Dawson Creek, we are preparing in three key ways and asking residents to do the same: register for alerts, signup for news and volunteer for Emergency Support Services (ESS).
Residents are encouraged to register for Northeast BC (NEBC) Alerts at nebcalerts.ca. NEBC alerts is the notification platform for the region, and residents can register to receive alerts via email, phone or text.
This system is particularly important for the vulnerable population, including Seniors or those that may not have access to social media and websites. Businesses and local non-profit organizations are encouraged to register their business addresses, emails and phone numbers as well to ensure they receive crucial emergency information that may affect clients or property.
The City Emergency Newsfeed is the platform where all emergency news related to Dawson Creek is posted by the City Emergency Team. In the case of a large emergency where an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is activated, this is the platform where evacuees can expect to find information about the centre. The City of Dawson Creek often acts as a host community to those who are displaced or evacuated from their residence due to fires, floods, and other emergencies. In 2023, the City’s Emergency Support Services (ESS) team supported over 2500 evacuees with lodging, food, clothing, and animal services.
In preparation for this year’s emergency season, the City is hosting a volunteer recruitment event on Tuesday, May 14th at Beans and Barley, 1444 102 Avenue. Dawson Creek from 7:00-8:00pm for all who are interested.
If you are unable to make it to the in-person volunteer recruitment session, visit www.dawsoncreek.ca/ess to learn more and fill out a Volunteer Registration Form.
Remember, if you can be reached, you can be notified. One simple notification may be all it takes to ensure that your family is aware of an emergency situation and can get to safety. This year during Emergency Preparedness Week let’s take a proactive approach and set the community up for success during the emergency season.
