Oxeye Daisy is a herbaceous perennial. Oxeye can be located in managed and unmanaged landscapes, roadsides, grazing areas, grasslands, rocky or gravely sites, moist soils and in dry soils once established. Oxeye is a productive seed producer, generally spreading anywhere from 2000 to 4000 seeds, but can produce upwards of 26,000 seeds. Oxeye mainly spreads by seed, but can also produce new plants from it rhizomes and fibrous root systems.
Oxeye Daisy primarily affects meadows and pastures. Oxeye irritates the nose, mouth and legs of animals that forage and walk through this plant. Oxeye is not considered palatable, so animals don’t tend to eat it, allowing for the plant to spread and outcompete more desirable grazing species.
Scientific Name: Leucanthemum vulgare
Common Name: Oxeye Daisy
Type: Invasive Plant, Noxious Weed
Family: Asteraceae
One of the most effective control methods is to hand pull or dig the plant and roots. Pulling before Oxeye flowers and seeds will greatly limit its spread. The use of a mower or string trimmer can also be effective, if the plant is cut down before it flowers and seeds. Re-establishing or re-planting vegetation that will outcompete Oxeye Daisy will greatly reduce Oxeyes ability to spread and establish.
Oxeye Daisy should not be combined with other green waste. Notify the attendant when bringing to green waste facilities to see if they have an area where it can be disposed. For green waste facilities put contents into a clear plastic bag. If there is not a location for it to be disposed, contents can be put into a black plastic bag and put it in your garbage bin or take to your local garbage disposal facility.
