Drought Emergency

Dawson Creek has experienced persistent drought conditions since 2020, including a Level 4 drought designation in January 2024 when the Kiskatinaw River froze and water intake operations were temporarily halted.

Conditions worsened again in the summer of 2025, resulting in another Level 4 drought designation and leading the City to declare a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) on October 14, 2025. The declaration enabled the City to access provincial resources and implement emergency measures to help protect the community's water supply.

Emergency Overland Water Transfer System

As part of the City's drought response, a temporary overland water transfer system was established to allow water to be pumped from the Peace River to Dawson Creek's water system if required. This emergency infrastructure remains an important contingency measure and can be deployed should future drought conditions threaten the City's primary water supply.

Current Status

The State of Local Emergency has ended, and Dawson Creek's water system is currently operating under normal conditions. While immediate emergency measures are no longer required, the City continues to monitor water supply conditions closely and maintain preparedness plans to ensure a rapid response if needed.

Planning for the Future

The City is actively advancing the Water Supply System Project to identify and evaluate long-term solutions that will strengthen water security and reduce the community's vulnerability to future drought events. This work includes assessing alternative water sources, infrastructure requirements, environmental considerations, and long-term water demand.
