Dawson Creek Water Supply System Project

The Dawson Creek Water Supply System Project was launched in January 2024 to secure a new, reliable water source for Dawson Creek and the region.

In Fall of 2025, the City invited feedback through the BC Environmental Assessment Office’s Early Engagement process regarding a proposed project corridor and the building of a new water line from the Peace River to the Dawson Creek water system. Indigenous communities, residents, agencies, and technical experts were asked to review the project’s Initial Project Description and provide input.

Next Steps – Detailed Technical Work

Guided by valuable input from Indigenous communities, residents, agencies, and technical experts, the City is undertaking more detailed technical work aimed at determining the best source for new water, how much water is needed, and the most effective way to deliver it to Dawson Creek.

This approach builds on previous work completed as part of the BC Environmental Assessment Office’s Early Engagement process, which confirmed the urgency of the issue and identified aspects of the project that need more investigation.

The technical assessment will help identify the following:

  • The amount of water our community will require in the future

  • Potential water sources

  • Required water treatment processes

  • Potential routes and infrastructure to deliver water to Dawson Creek

  • The costs and risks associated with each option

We will engage with Indigenous communities, government and regulatory agencies, industry and residents throughout this process to ensure we understand the various needs and requirements before selecting a water source.

Project Phases

This work to secure a reliable water source will take place over four phases, allowing us to pause, reflect, and adapt as needed to make sure we are taking the right steps and making the best decisions for our community moving forward:

A timeline showing the four phases of the project: research, analysis, evaluation and implementation

Early Engagement

The Dawson Creek Water Supply System project is in the early stages of environmental review with the Province of BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). Early Engagement began in September, with the public comment period being open from September 23 and ran until October 23, 2025.

The compiled feedback is now available for viewing on the EAO's website at EPIC.engage.

The City recognizes that some of the feedback highlighted concerns about the project approach, including the need for clearer communication, stronger relationships with Indigenous communities, and more transparency about project impacts and benefits.

This feedback is appreciated and is an important part of the environmental assessment process. It will be considered and incorporated by the City as the project continues to evolve.

Why this project is needed

In early 2024, low flows in the Kiskatinaw River prevented pumping for almost two months. This project will improve water security, support agriculture and industry, aid emergency response in drought and fire seasons, and reduce pressure on the Kiskatinaw watershed.

Benefits to the region

  • High-quality and secure water source for residents of Dawson Creek, Pouce Coupe, and the surrounding region for domestic use, agriculture, industry, and wildfire mitigation
  • Reduces stress on, and promotes recovery, of the Kiskatinaw River Watershed
  • Promotes stewardship of water resources in the region for the benefit of all water users
