Kenn Borek Aquatic Centre Closed for Extended Maintenance in 2025
Dawson Creek, BC – The Kenn Borek Aquatic Centre (KBAC), including the climbing wall, will be closed for its annual maintenance shutdown from August 16 to October 10, 2025 and will reopen on October 11, 2025. This year’s shutdown will last eight weeks so we can complete some big upgrades and repairs that require additional time.
“This yearly shutdown helps us keep the facility clean, safe, and running smoothly,” said Mayor Darcy Dober. “This is Year 2 of a two-year plan for extended maintenance shutdowns. The City Team is doing a lot of important work this year that will improve the facility for everyone, and most importantly, protect this City asset so it lasts for generations to come.”
What’s Happening During the Shutdown
-
Main Lap Pool Repairs
We’ll drain the main lap pool (that’s 990,000 litres of water), give it a deep clean, fix any damage, and regrout the pool floor. The grout takes approximately two weeks to dry. After the grout dries, we’ll refill and heat the pool again. -
Ozone System Upgrade
We’re replacing our old ozone sanitizing equipment with new systems. These will be easier to maintain and more reliable than the last. -
Other Work Being Done
-
-
Leisure Pool: We’ll drain and clean it and replace the underwater lights.
-
Tots Pool: We’ll review and fix the underwater lights if needed.
-
Hot Tub: We’re repairing the small lights around it.
-
Steam Room & Sauna: We’ll replace the heat sensors and extend the new aquatic life mural.
-
Rust Prevention: We’ll keep working on areas where rust can build up on the deck.
-
Deep Cleaning: Change rooms, climbing wall boulders, and more will get a full clean.
-
Routine Maintenance: We’ll inspect pumps, electrical systems, filters, tanks, and more. We’ll also rebuild the acid delivery system and clean the steam generator.
-
Some of these upgrades are already in progress, and the extended shutdown will give the team time to finish everything safely and properly. We’ve also experienced some wins already. Over the last year, we’ve fully upgraded our chlorine system. All six of our chlorine generators and all seventeen salt cells have been replaced. This means cleaner, better water for everyone.
We know the pool is an important part of the community, and we appreciate your patience while we do this necessary work. We look forward to welcoming you back in mid-October with a refreshed and improved facility.
