SOLE Renewal - Dawson Creek Monitors Water Closely

Dawson Creek, BC – The City of Dawson Creek has applied to extend its State of Local Emergency (SOLE) in response to the continued drought conditions that are placing pressure on our water supply. While we remain committed to protecting household, commercial, and essential-service water needs, the situation requires coordination and support to safeguard our community now and into the coming months.

As we move into winter, the City is closely monitoring conditions on the Kiskatinaw River. When water levels are as low as they are now, the river is at increased risk of freezing solid. This occurred in early 2024, preventing the City from pumping water into our reservoirs. Should the river freeze through again this winter, we will be unable to draw additional water from the Kiskatinaw River and will need to rely solely on the reserves currently stored in our reservoirs.

Thanks to careful management and the additional precipitation received in recent weeks, the City’s water reservoirs have increased from approximately 150 days of storage to about 180 days. This improvement reflects the diligent efforts of City staff, who have been closely monitoring water levels, optimizing pumping operations, and conserving every available drop. These actions have strengthened our community’s water security as we prepare for the colder months ahead.

The City of Dawson Creek remains in Stage 3 Water Conservation measures. Under Stage 3, hauling potable water for non-potable uses is strictly prohibited, and residents, businesses, and contractors are reminded to limit water consumption to essential needs only. These restrictions are necessary to ensure that our available water supply can continue to meet critical community demands, including drinking water, sanitation, and fire protection.
