Agriculture Sector

The agriculture sector is a thriving industry within Dawson Creek and the surrounding area. Both the growing conditions, as well as the proximity to west coast grain terminals, provide an advantage to farmers in the Peace Region.

Local production

Crops, livestock and honey make up the Dawson Creek agriculture sector. Large land parcels, quality feed and long daylight hours in the summer contribute to the healthy growing seasons in the region.

The traditional crops grown in the area are wheat, oats, barley, and canola. The Peace Region produces almost 90% of BC's grain and 95% of BC's canola, as well as 90% of the dry field peas and 95% of forage seeds. Low temperatures in the winter reduce insect populations, limiting the need for pesticides. The full list of crops grown in the area includes:

  • Wheat
  • Oats
  • Barley
  • Canola
  • Fescue
  • Alfalfa
  • Rye
  • Field peas
  • Berries
  • Greenhouse products
  • Field Vegetables
  • Fruit
  • Forage

Long daylight hours make it possible for bee-keepers to produce as much as three times more honey per hive than elsewhere in the province.

Livestock produced in the region includes both traditional livestock, as well as some exotic types. Located in Dawson Creek is a provincially inspected slaughter facility, and poultry processing plants can be found at the local Hutterite Colonies.
