Community Assistance

Several societies and agencies operate within Dawson Creek to provide community assistance and social services to our residents.

Dawson Creek Haven Family Services provides social services focusing on improving the mental health and development of all children, youth and adults in the community.

The Dawson Creek Literacy Society (DCLS) provides literacy training through many programs for all ages. Some programs offered are:

  • Community Adult Literacy Program (CALP)
  • English as a Second Language Settlement Assistance Program (ESLSAP)

The Dawson Creek Society for Community Living (DCSCL) provides services, educations, advocacy and resources to seniors and people with disabilities.

The Nawican Friendship Centre provides counselling, information, guidance and recreational and educational programming for the Dawson Creek area. The Nawican Bergeron Youth and Cultural Centre provides similar programming with a focus on youth.

The South Peace Child Development Centre provides programs for children and youth from 0 through 19, as well as parenting support. There is also a preschool onsite.

  • children, youth, families and women who have experienced violence

  • adults with diverse abilities
  • children with special needs
  • couples and individuals experiencing trauma or difficulties in their life

Crisis services

The BC Ambulance Services based in Dawson Creek operates multiple ambulances. The response area includes all of the Peace Region and areas close to the Alberta border including Bay Tree, Bonanza and Gundy.

  • 911 dispatches the services and processes approximately 3,500 calls annually.
  • Dawson Creek is the regional training centre for paramedics in the Peace District, with other regional training occurring in various locations as needed.

The Dawson Creek Fire Department provides fire and rescue services to the City of Dawson Creek. Along with a rural radius around the city which includes South Dawson, Briar Ridge, and Riley's Crossing. The department responds to incidents including fire suppression, road rescue, hazmat, confined space entry, rope rescue and wildland fire.

  • The department also conducts fire code inspection services and public education programs.

The Dawson Creek RCMP Detachment polices Dawson Creek, Pouce Coupe, Rolla, Groundbirch, Farmington and Kelly Lake. The RCMP members are also involved in the community through many programs such as:

  • DARE
  • Community Policing
  • Rural Crime Watch
  • Citizens on Patrol
  • Speed Watch
  • Crimestoppers
  • Business Watch

South Peace Search and Rescue is volunteer run and provides support to Ground Search and Rescue activities throughout the Peace Region. All members receive search training and have wilderness or advanced wilderness first aid training. Some members are trained in more specialized areas.

Dawson Creek Victim Services provides victims of crime with information, practical assistance and emotional support. They provide support at the hospital, with the RCMP and in court. Referrals to other services are made when appropriate. Critical incident stress debriefing is also provided. Victim's assistance workers also accompany the RMCP to assist with death and accident notification, including sudden death calls.

The current hospital has a full diagnostic and treatment centre for local and regional services. As well as in-patient services in medicine, surgery, obstetrics, psychiatry and rehabilitative medicine. The following out-patient services are also available:

The South Peace Health Services Society (SPHSS) is dedicated to enhancing medical care in the peace region. The society concentrates its efforts on keeping doctors and nurses in the area. SPHSS operates the Bulterys Community House, a house near the hospital that is available for health professionals and visiting patients. Learn more about SPHSS.

Geriatric services

Northern Health and the Dawson Creek Society for Community Living provide most of the geriatric services in Dawson Creek. They offer assisted living, long-term care and independent housing. Community programs that help seniors with daily tasks or encourage them to get active are also available.
