Water Security
Dawson Creek was not built around a major water source, unlike many other cities that developed near lakes or large rivers. Over the years, this has led to ongoing challenges in maintaining a secure and sustainable water supply, especially during dry seasons. Water security has remained a priority over the years and the City has taken many steps towards ensuring a secure water source is available for residents, businesses and the surrounding region.
Dawson Creek Water Supply System Project
In January 2024, the City Team began work on pursuing a new water source for Dawson Creek, BC due to prolonged drought in the region. The following projects have contributed to this work:
- Dawson Creek Water Supply System Project: This project began in January 2024 with the goal of securing a new water source for the community. Read more about the project on the Water Supply System Project page.
- Drought Emergency: The Emergency Operations Team has a short-term plan in place to ensure the community has access to water if we are unable to pump water from the Kiskatinaw River due to drought before a new water source is secured. Read more about the drought emergency and the planning the City team has completed on the Drought Emergency page.
- Sure Water Campaign 2013: The City of Dawson Creek contracted consultants in 2013 to conduct the Sure Water Information and Consultation Campaign. The campaign and results were used to kickstart the Water Supply System project and guide the past years of water security work. View the results and full report online.
