Sewer Backups

Vegetation or improper disposal of items such as grease, wipes, diapers, hair, and other items will cause a sewer blockage.

Responsibility

As a property owner, you are responsible for the maintenance and clearing of blockages from the sanitary main to the building. Local plumbers can assist with this service. If you have house insurance, contact your insurance agency to ask if you can submit a claim.

The City is responsible for any structural repairs required from the sanitary main to the property line.

Try to determine where the blockage is. It could be that a blocked toilet or sink or the sewer service (the main drain pipe leading out from the house).
